My corresponding focus is on Special Yoga, which aims to

‘. . . help the child retrain their automatic stress reaction, and replace
it with one more conducive to happiness and overall well-being.’

This will help with my main aim of helping your child to cope better,
learn to become calmer and be still in their surroundings,
as well as being able to self-soothe.

Special Yoga works with
my main aim of

  • helping your child to
    cope better,
  • learn to
    become calmer &
  • be still in their
    surroundings,
  • as well as being able
    to self-soothe.

As a Special Yoga practitioner, we’re encouraged to have an intention (sankalpa) which we think about whilst doing the poses (asanas). My current focus is to enable all children I work with to be open to – and eventually fulfil – their own, full potential.

A large part of Special Yoga is also the use of calming breathing, which I discuss in more detail here. This helps the nervous energy common in children with additional needs to be ‘. . . released from the body in a calm way improving sensory integration and relaxing the nervous system’ specialyoga.org.uk.

Therefore, one of my aims is to help your child concentrate on and regulate their breathing, helping them develop the ability to change their emotional state, and therefore become calmer.

As with massage, there are many benefits of using Special Yoga with your child, especially over a long period of time:

The breathing techniques used within Special Yoga helps calm the body through the effects on the nervous system. This in turn helps children with conditions such as ADHD feel calmer and less frustrated, among other things.

I will teach your child to use these techniques by themselves, so they will eventually be able to use them any time they are feeling overwhelmed or stressed, which also helps teach them self-awareness and control; it’s so beneficial for them to have the ability to calm themselves at will.

Combined with the yoga poses or massage strokes, specialised breathing exercises can:

  • Improve concentration
  • Improve respiratory function
  • Improve quality of sleep
  • Reduce hyperactivity
  • Reduce fear, stress or tension
